New clarinet piece for Music Past and Present

This February will see the premiere of Distant Canons, a new piece for clarinet and piano, specially written for the long-established Music Past and Present series, which aims to break down barriers between contemporary and more familiar classical music. Clarinettist Peter Cigleris and pianist Yuki Negishi will give the first performance of the new work as part of their recital at the Royal Academy of Music, London, on February 2nd.

Illusions and expectations: two academic papers for summer 2011

Recent months have seen Jonathan make appearances at two international conferences to give papers on ideas relating to his recent work.

‘Creating the illusion of improvisation: a composer’s perspective’, which took as its focus the piano/disklavier duo Con Spirito, formed part of the programme of the Centre for Musical Performance as Creative Practice’s (CMPCP) inaugural Performance Studies Network conference, held at the University of Cambridge in July. This will soon be available in digital form at www.cmpcp.ac.uk/conferences.html.

Jonathan also took part in the ‘Anatomy of Listening’ colloquium at the Conference on Interdisciplinary Musicology in Glasgow in September. His paper, which drew its examples from the orchestral piece Mesh, was entitled ‘Raising expectations: a composer’s perspective on the relationship between creative practice and music psychology’.

Current projects

Works in progress, or at a planning stage, currently include a new two-movement composition for symphonic wind ensemble and (funding permitting) a major new project involving ‘misbehaving’ flute and keyboard instruments. More to follow...
